The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini Book Review
Copyright 2003 Riverhead Books New York The best thing about The Kite Runner is it’s realistic hard look at Afghanistan and its people. Hosseini uses his narrator, Amir, to tell a heartbreaking story about one Afghani boy. Recurring themes in this book are forgiveness, loyalty, and of course the ever present kite. Amir returns to the place of his childhood, Kabul and uses the kite war tradition as a main focal point for his tales. This is the part of his life that changed him. The kite wars would be the point of his life that he goes back to time and again to face his suffering, find his acceptance and also his forgiveness. Along with the kite war tradition, Hosseini also take you on the journey of the fall of Afghanistan. From the time the king was driven away from his rule to the time Russia took over. Hosseini takes you through the journey of many Afghanis to America to escape the Russians. After the Russians, came the Taliban. They ruled until the Americans drove them out. All the while, Amir gives a vivid picture of the horrors his native country endured. And yet, underneath all the horror was an even closer pain than loss of country. A secret from his childhood that would cause him more suffering and maybe even offer him some relief. This book was heart wrenching and yet enlightening. The best part of the book was it’s look at Afghani culture and how real the struggle remains to this day. The themes are important to discuss, no matter the time period or the culture. This novel spans the gaps between race and culture to reach the hearts and minds of everyone. ~CeCe To my readers,
I welcome you to my fantasy world. This is only the beginning. A small taste before I release Escape from Espela. This is the beginning of it all. A taste of the world you'll be entering, the first half the leads up to the beginning of the tale. Life in this world sprang from a single spot. That spot was once nothing more than a sapling of a tree. To the inhabitants of this world, that tree is known as The Great Tree of Espela. I, Gravidium, tended the tree for several years. When the tree for it’s first fruits, I helped the spread of the seeds. Those seeds grew into many different plants. They became the azaleas of valley. Amaryllis bloomed in the woods near the great oaks. Apple Blossom trees grew in what would one day be a great kingdom. From this tree also sprang the fairies. Small creatures of wisdom that I left to care for the plants of Espela. Once they were winged creatures with pointed ears. Their wings carried them lightly from one area to another. After the first age of this world, the fairies evolved. They became much larger. Their height was now five to six feet instead of five to six inches. Their wings disappeared. They were now Elves.Wise and fair creatures. Their gifts were many. Some could heal with a touch, others had the gift of foresight. Still others had the gift of telepathy. They were immortal and would care for tis world until they hose to move on to the next world. A place known as The Glittering Shore. From The Great Tree of Espela, I created another race. The race of men came to life at the beginning of the second age of this world. The Elves had taken to the vast cities of the woods. their special care has been granted to the trees in their changing season from green to amber and back again. But the valley below the mountains needed care as well. I left that part of the world to Men. For a full age both races lived in harmony. They met only once a year to give thanks to me and the The Great Tree of Espela. It was always a grand festival, a time to share the different harvests. but the end of the Second Age saw it’s first changes. War had broken out between factions of Men. The common folk of the valley revolted against the royals. The royal line became broken and disappeared into the wilds outside of the woods. The Elves hid in their vast cities, hight in the branches and cared nothing for the wars of men. In sadness, I watched as the line of kings became Rangers, hunters and survivalists in the wild. This lasted for nearly five generations. Meanwhile, the first king’s right hand man had seized the throne and taxed the people. He put an end to the annual Festival of Life. Darkness had literally fallen on the Valley and the only light came from the woods. It wold take one Man, the last son of the broken line of Kings, to rise out of the shadows. His name is Angar. As child he was adopted by the Elders of the Elves when his mother pleaded for sanctuary for her son. Sanctuary and a request the he would know his lineage and take his place. But for nearly half of his life he refused to take back the throne and continued living as his father as a Ranger. He would need my help to emerge from the shadows and take back the throne of Men. Tune in soon for Ansgar's rise to the throne with the help of Gravidium and maybe his first encounters with Aviana. ~CeCe Feeling accomplished. I managed to write my first full short story this week, Escape from Espela. There is still a lot of editing to do I'm sure. And there is more to come with the characters. The story will continue where this one left off in the next installment...coming soon. This story is not yet published and sorry I will not be posting here for you all to read yet. I will post some of the sketches I used to create this story for you though.

I forgot how hard it is to write a story. All the planning and editing , characters and setting...it's even harder now since my mind wants to analyze every piece of it. Liw (Liv) has struggles...that seems to be the easy part. The hard part is figuring out how she'll overcome those struggles or will she? Also, what is causing the external problem in this tale?...Questions that need answers....and Marie's trying to help but she's not doing a very good job. lol
I recently started thinking about Liw (Liv) again. I decided she needed an update. My goal is soon to have her story written. She may be helping me at times when she walks across the keyboard and enters her own ideas .
