My first thoughts for this book reminded me of the the play Harvey. Many people are familiar with Harvey, the imaginary six foot white rabbit. He can only be seen by by the main character, Elwood P. Dowd. Elwood’s family in this play believe he may be crazy for seeing an imaginary friend but he may prove to be quite wise. Jackson is similar to Elwood in many ways. He’s a smart young pre-teen who wants to grow up to be a scientist. Everything in his life is based on facts. And he’s too old for an imaginary friend. But without warning his imaginary friend from years past reappears. What is this imaginary friend that only Jackson can see? He’s a large cat that he named Crenshaw. He believes he may be going crazy for seeing his imaginary friend again at this age. But is just when things in his life are a little crazy that this friend reappears. This book was great for readers of all ages who may be struggling in their life. Maybe your life has turned upside down and you need an imaginary friend to talk too as well. Maybe Jackson will share Crenshaw with others who face struggles and have to come to terms with those struggles in life. ~CeCe “He finally made a third appearance at the top of the tower which housed the great bell. From there he seemed to show the girl triumphantly to the who city and his thunderous voice, which others heard so seldom and which he himself never heard at all, roared savagely up at the sky, “Sanctuary! Sanctuary! Sanctuary!”’ ( Hugo pg. 190). This may be one of the most famous scenes from classic literature. Quasimodo rescuing La Esmeralda from the gallows and offering her sanctuary inside the cathedral of Notre Dame. The only shame is this isn’t a happy ending for a character. If you read this book do not expect Disney’s characteristically happy ending for all of it’s characters. Disney’s stage musical was a little closer to the novel, it offered a nice combination of the two. But I digress. We begin our tale in the year 1482 on day of the Feast of Fools. Let us introduce our playwright, Pierre Gringoire and the visiting Flemish ambassadors. After the arrival of the Flemish into the Palace of Justice, who introduce the crowning of the pope of fools tradition and interrupting our playwright’s play the real festivities begin when Quasimodo appears and is named the pope of fools. Gringoire, disgruntled, leaves without being paid to wander the streets for a place to stay. It is during Gringoire’s journey we are introduced to our next characters: self-righteous Dom Claude Frollo, La Esmeralda and Captain Phoebus. Already Frollo’s lust for La Esmeralda has taken root and he seeks to make her his own. He uses Quasimodo to try to steal the girl and is interrupted in his attempt by Gringoire and then Captain Phoebus. Frollo manages to escape leaving Quasimodo to his fate. As the tragic story unfolds and our characters learn about themselves and become more intermingled, we forget Quasimodo for about half the book. Instead the focus remains upon a lust triangle between Captain Phoebus and Frollo with La Esmeralada at the center. Both lust after the beautiful and captivating gypsy girl who’s main goal is to be reunited with her mother. She offers to forsake her sacred vow for her love for Phoebus. Frollo on the other hand will have none of it. In an attempt to rid himself of the competition he devises a plan to frame Esmeralda for the death of Phoebus. You may be wondering what has happened to our playwright. Well, early on he was married to La Esmeralda after she saved his life in the Court of Miracles. Then he too was forgotten until Frollo needed him to help devise a plan to get rid of Phoebus and later to try to rescue La Esmeralda. Sadly, the end is not a happy end for a characters. Even though Quasimodo offered La Esmeralda sanctuary, the king of France and Frollo had other plans. I won’t say anymore about our characters fates. Instead I leave you with the above scene and Disney’s beloved ending of hope that even a hunchback can feel compassion for others in a world filled with so much hatred. The Hunchback of Notre Dame Victor Hugo 1831 ~CeCe We all know Shakespeare or have heard of some his work. Some of the most popular being Hamlet, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet. But who really wrote these great feats for the stage and other sonnets. What do we really know about the man called William Shakespeare. History shows that Shakespeare was the son of a glove maker. It also shows that he went to London and became an actor. But not much is really known about his time in London. Was he only an actor? We know he finished his last years in his home town of Stratford-upon-Avon. But if he didn’t write those great comedies and tragedies for the stage, then who did? Anonymous was released in 2011 and explores the rumors behind the the true identity of the playwright behind Shakespeare’s works. One theory out there is that the real playwright was actually Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford. So how did Shakespeare’s name appear on these plays? Well, how many nobleman at that time were famous as playwrights and writers? None. So, Edward needed someone to take credit for his work. Though William Shakepeare was not his first choice. Set against the Essex revolt against Elizabeth ! and her succession, Anonymous is a tale of love, some incest as we are looking at the end of the Tudor line and betrayal. All the workings of the a story of the Victorian Era. A great a film to make one think and research more about that time period and the origins of Shakespeare’s work. ~CeCe Hush, released in 2016, is currently playing on Netflix. This film is maybe one of my favorite horror/suspense films of all time. A warning for some, you may not like since it has no real sound other than some suspenseful music. This film is silent for a reason. The protagonist of this film is deaf. There is sign language at times but mostly the viewer will have to watch this movie with the subtitles. However, I do not feel that that takes away from the adventure within the film. Our deaf author, Maddie, has chosen to live in a secluded area in the woods alone where she writes. Her only companions are her cat, Bitch, and her two neighbors. Her character shows what being deaf can feel like and the isolation a deaf person feels, especially when a killer is out in the woods. There is not much pretext to this film. It gets to the suspense quickly with Maddie and the killer, who at first is masked but soon reveals his face. Maddie is now in a fight for her life where she lacks an advantage. This movie was amazing. I enjoyed every moment of it. Also left me with a notion to stay away from the woods of isolation. ~CeCe Here's a scene for you guys that I wrote based on an incident that really happened. Kind of scary too. One night at work a few customers were in the store buying a few items when Cece and the customers heard a very loud sound. To them they thought something had exploded nent out to try to find the source. Jen came out of the bathroom while the customer was outside. Jen: What was that? Did you just drop a bulk in the cabinet? CeCe: No. I’ve was standing right here when that happened. Then the customer comes back into the store. Customer: I’m sorry. CeCe: No, you're fine. Did you find out what happened? Customer: No, I’m not sure what happened. Customer buys her things and then leaves. Shortly after a young gentleman comes in the store. Guy: Do you have the number for the police dispatch? Jen: Yeah. What happened? Guy: Some guy threw something out of his car window and lit up the whole house that their building across the street. Police arrive soon after the call. Police officer:I was about a mile and a half up the road and felt what you’re describing. I can’t find the source across the street. It must have just been a firecracker. Jen: If that was a firecracker it was one suped up firecracker if he heard that far up the road. Enjoy this small scene from retail until next time. ~CeCe Apollyon book review The Left Behind Series continues with the meeting of the 144,000 in Jerusalem.
